Ghosted

Ever had an employee ghost you? One day they’re turning up consistently… and the next, poof, they’re gone and completely unreachable. It happens more often than you’d think, and in HR we call this abandonment. 👻💼

When this happens, it’s important to follow a clear, fair and well‑documented process. That means making every reasonable attempt to contact them: texts, phone calls, emails, even visiting their home or contacting their next of kin if necessary. And don’t forget to document each attempt.

From there, you’ll want to send a formal letter requiring them to return to work. If they don’t make contact or attend within the standard three‑day abandonment window, you can then bring the employment relationship to an end with a termination letter.

It’s never ideal, but having the right process protects both you and the organisation and keeps things clean, fair and compliant.

If you’re dealing with a similar situation or want support managing abandonment correctly, reach out. We’re here to help you navigate it with confidence. 💬🤝
