One Liner

What’s one line every manager should have tucked away for when things get tricky? 💡

Here it is.

“Would you like us to consider alternatives to this process?”

It might sound simple, but this one sentence can be incredibly powerful. It acts as a circuit breaker in formal, on-the-record processes like disciplinary action, restructures, absenteeism issues or medical matters.

When you pause a formal process and ask this question, you create space. You give the employee autonomy. You signal that there may be another way forward. Often, people are surprised by the question. That’s okay. It opens the door to stepping back, taking advice, and considering a different type of conversation.

From there, you may be able to explore a without prejudice discussion. One that looks at resolving an issue or even concluding an employment relationship in a way that is quicker, more humane, and often lower risk for everyone involved. Sometimes the best outcomes happen before a dispute even fully takes shape.

It’s a simple line, but knowing when and how to use it can make a real difference.
